House Searching

Most of you know that Jason and I are in the middle of buying a house.  A few weeks in and it already feels like eternity!  We started with a bunch of specifications, and they have morphed so many times that we're totally confused about what we want!  Large yard and long commute or small yard and short commute?  Modern house we won't want to change at all or older house that we'll renovate to make it our own?  We know our budget, but we've also discovered we have really picky/expensive tastes.

That's all from me today, but I'd love people to share anything house-related... things you looked for in a house, things you wished you had looked for, anything about the actual home-buying part.  I want to glean that wisdom, so please share!

We wanted a house with some fixing, but not a lot of fixing. The house we purchased was about 10 years old and as you know we still have plenty of fixing to do and have done in the past 4 years... With that said, one of the things I wish we would have looked at harder was the other houses in the neighborhood. For example, how well does the neighborhood yards look? Are they well maintained or do some of them really just NOT care at all? Our immediate surrounding houses are okay, but some of them really just don't care and look awful, I can't imagine that looking good for the rest of the neighborhood sometimes. Other than that, some things as far as expensive taste go you just have to move on and let go of. You can't win them all and you'll always find things that need to be updated and fixed even if you buy a brand new house. ;) xoxo

No great advice, just that we know EXACTLY what you mean right now. We want a bigger yard, but would like to be closer to Apex, which DOES NOT exist. At least not in our price range.

I agree with Amanda, one reason we would like to move is that we don't think this neighborhood will age well...and it won't be a place we want to live in 10 more years. And we built new only 6 years ago!

I keep thinking the right house will turn up eventually. Hopefully for you too! :)

We wanted a house with at least 3 BR's and at least 2 baths. We wanted a yard for the boys to play in, away from the road. And it had to be big enough for my family to come for the holidays. I have a BIG family. We looked at 5 or 6 houses. We saw a couple we would have "settled" for and we made an offer on one that we were glade that was turned down. (Found out later that house had mold inthe basement) We prayed for the house God wanted us to have and when we walked in to our new house we knew it was the one. It even smelled like home. I will keep praying for your house. You will find the one that is supposed to be yours.

My dream list was: a ranch on more than a quarter acre, not on a busy street, vaulted ceilings, a garage, a skylight. I did not think I would get any of those things, especially when we realized we had to shift our price range so that the bottom of our range was the new top of our range.

Oddly enough... we ended up in a ranch on .38 acres at the end of a cul-de-sac, with vaulted ceilings, a skylight, and a garage big enough for Derek to put a workbench in. :)

Now, of course, I wish I had listed a dining room, a fourth bedroom/office/playroom, and a larger kitchen... but hey, that's what a first house is for, right? To find out what things you didn't get that you didn't know you probably wanted... LOL

Our house is about 20 years old, but it was in pretty good shape. We've done a few "big" projects (e.g. remodeling both bathrooms, re-doing the back deck) but we've been able to do them at our own pace, which has been nice.

we got a house you can have ;)

And we finally found our home for the long haul. Yard, close to work, extra place space for the kids, on a cul-de-sac, great neighborhood with other families. We know it can be overwhelming but you guys picked a good time to buy because you have so many options! Good Luck!!

Jenn, your house actually popped up on our list (we recognized the windows in the living room), but we're looking for an upstairs master so we can be closer to our hypothetical children.

Thanks everyone for all the advice/encouragement! I've become really overwhelmed in the past few days (hence the lack of blog posts recently), but all of your comments have really helped.
