Tylerisms

No pictures today, just a few Tyler stories:

A few weeks ago, we picked Tyler up from Sunday School.  He was playing with a baby doll when we got there.
Jason: "What were you playing with the baby doll?"
Tyler: "Diaper change!"
Me: "Are you going to change the baby's diapers when it gets here?"
Tyler (emphatically): "YES!"
Me: "Even the stinky diapers?"
Tyler: "Eww, that's stinky!"

Jason's parents came to visit a few weeks ago.  Since then, whenever Tyler is whining or gets "hurt" (as in, falls, but could in no way possible be hurt), he'll whine and say "Uhhhh, Nana, PawPaw."  We mostly ignored this.  Now, he throws in the other grandparents for good measure: "Uhhhh, Nana, PawPaw, Grandma, Pa."

It's gone from cute to mildly amusing to annoying.  This morning (after he was throwing a fit about brushing his teeth), the words "They can't help you now" and "No one can hear you scream" may have come from my mouth.

We always used to listen to Caspar Babypants in the car.  Recently, Jason told me that he and Tyler had listened to "Daddy music" on the way home from school.  Since then, Tyler has been requesting Daddy music instead of his own.  Thank goodness, because I couldn't handle hearing those songs one. more. time.

I picked Tyler up from school the other day, so we listened to Mama music on the way home.  That music happened to be the Ting Tings.  Tyler LOVED IT.  He likes to sing the "Drum Song" (Great DJ).

The drums part is in the chorus, starting at about 1 minute.

His personal favorite (and mine, too) is "That's Not My Name."  He finds this hilarious, and at any point, we can say to him "That's not my name!" and he'll giggle and say it back to us.

My kid, Ting Tings fan.  I'm so proud!

18 Days of Celebrating 18 Months -- Music

Tyler (like most kids) loves music.  On our road trip to New Bern, we listened to some of his little kid music (Caspar Babypants, highly recommend) in the car.  After certain songs, he would clap his hands and say "Yay!"  If he really liked a song (like "Three Blind Mice"), he'd request it over and over and over!

Stompy the Bear:  one of his faves from the trip.  (if the video doesn't load, you can watch it here).

One of his favorite car games is when we whistle or hum a song and he names the tune.  I know very little about what kids his age can/cannot do, but he can seriously name a least a dozen songs, sometimes after just a few hummed notes!

He participates in "If You're Happy and You Know It," clapping, stomping, and yelling "Amen!"  During diaper changes, he requests "Itsy Bitsy Spider" and has gotten pretty good at the hand motions.  He contributes to the lyrics of "You are my Sunshine," "Row, Row, Row Your Boat," "Jingle Bells" (just the "hey!" part), "Munuh muh nuh" song, "Jesus Loves Me," and "Old McDonald."

His two favorite songs (right now, changes regularly) are "Baa Baa Black Sheep" and "The Wheels on the Bus."  During Baa Baa, he will throw down whatever he is playing with, stand up, and do this crazy bee-bopping dance (best way I can describe it).  Now that I think about it, he does the same thing (except with a foot-stomping dance) with "BINGO."  Maybe it's something they do during music time at school?

He loves "Wheels on the Bus" so much that we've had to come up with extra verses.  Now, you may know that the wheels go round-and-round, and that the people go up-and-down.  You may know that that babies go "Wah wah wah" and the Mamas go "Shh shh shh."  But did you know that the Daddies go "Heh heh heh"?  Did you know that there were monkeys on the bus?  Or peacocks?  (Tyler does a pretty mean peacock impression).  Well, on Tyler's bus, there are.

On the Way to Work

Some drives to work are very moving and meaningful (like yesterday's post).  Other days are like today where after my morning prayer, I find a fun, peppy song on the radio.  This morning, I heard this song and it made me smile.  I liked it enough that I wanted to post it, even after I found out it was by Train (a band I usually dislike).

Happy Friday, everyone!

Day 10 -- Music for Every Mood

Disclaimer: I have bad taste in music.  There, I said it.  There are songs on my iPod that would make anyone groan, but I enjoy them (ps, stick around for Day 15... should be a hoot).  Jason is a bit of a music nut, so his taste in music has influenced mine, but the so-bad-they're-good songs still remain.  Ok, on with the post.

Songs I listen to when I'm feeling:
~ Happy/hyped: They have to get me up and dancing, so anything by Black Eyed Peas, the Ting Tings, En Vogue, or Kings of Leon will do.  Genre-wise, 90s R&B/rap or hard-hitting rock will also do the trick.
~Sad: I'm not really sad often, and when I am, I don't tend to listen to music, so I'll pass on this one
~Mad: Again, I don't really put on music when I'm mad.  Back in college though, my roommate Shannon knew to tread gently when she heard me playing Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill.  That was definitely my "angry music" back in college.
~Bored/Mellow: This is where Jason's music has really influenced me.  When I want calming background music, I listen to the Decemberists, the Avett Brothers, or Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova (from the movie "Once")
~Romantic: Alexi Murdoch, Norah Jones, or I go old school.  We're talking "Let's Stay Together," "Oh, Darling," "Somebody to Love," and "As I Lay Me Down."

Lots of links: If you're interested, here are links to several songs I like from some of the lesser-known artists mentioned above: the Ting Tingsthe Decemberists, the Avett BrothersGlen & MarketaAlexi Murdoch (Warning: these are youtube videos, so please pardon any inappropriate comments left by people)
